The app is designed to be a tool for learning and further investigation, not simply the catalogue in app form. With this in mind, I included only portions of the articles, and instead focused on take aways, including a summary at the end of each excerpt. These larger ideas are in place to encourage better retention of the speeches and articles. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; This app is a tangential learning experience, similar to Wikipedia, in which concepts that are important or related to other ideas are hyperlinks which lead to supplementary/complementary sources. Many of these sources enforce the idea through mediums other than written word to accomodate different learning types and to demonstrate the idea in a memorable way. After doing a a lot of research in the topic area, I had a really fun time choosing resources that I thought would fill out the written ideas. Everything from interrogation tapes to music playlists based on mood make an appearance. VISUALS ︎︎︎ I chose to keep the design simple, using only black, white, and three organizing colors. I took inspiration from collages for image treatment, isolating pictures from their background to prevent the whole design becoming too boxy and compartmentalized.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; Iconic and symbolic images appear as well, and I used symbols used in mapping and sound mapping as motifs, layered on the black and white to illustrate the idea of mapping sound in an urban context. I incorporated texture into many of the color pops, trying to give sound back some material qualities to emphasize its physical nature and its ability to reconfigure space. Our goal was to construct a parody of a rising professional through technology related to communication and organization (i.e. spreadsheet, briefcase, cell phone). &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; We also wanted to put a spin on the dated look, so we abstracted the items to simple, organic lines, and color blurbs. Our visual system is modular and we transferred and adapted it for the game’s various components, from packaging to resume items. THE NITTY GRITTY GAMEPLAY ︎︎︎ The objective of the game is to fill up each category on your resume (Experience, Education/Skills, Achievements, and Activities) to its respective point value. This is done by collecting Contact cards and trading them in for resume items. Each player starts with three Contact cards which are categorized by colors which correspond to different combinations of resume items. At the beginning of each turn, players must draw a card which will either be a Crisis, Action, Event, or Opportunity card. Additional Contact cards can be obtained by drawing an Opportunity card which will specify the amount to add to your collection. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;&nbsp; Crisis cards incorporate an element of chance into the game. These cards can result in the loss of resume items or Contacts, and are avoidable by rolling the die appropriately (even or odd). &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Action cards allow you to sabotage your opponent by making them discard their Contacts, taking their items, and more. Crisis and Action cards keep you on your toes by requiring you to anticipate the possibility of losing everything. This has an impact on your strategy while choosing which resume items to save your Contacts for in order to collect points in each category most advantageously. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Lastly, Event cards allow you to collect items that you don’t necessarily need to know people to gain, such as Achievements, Education, and Skills. There were a many times where Asumi and I would test a prototype we were really excited about only to discover a glaring flaw in the system, or that the game was actually a total snoozefest. consistent across the series, but each book’s design is informed by the visuals of its film. The books discuss their movies’ visual choices via the language of their movies’ graphic design.&nbsp;For example, The Fall features epic script and simple, structural, left-aligned text blocks, Enter the Void is entirely in Futura Condensed Bold and Japanese, and Amélie is a mix of vintage typefaces and faux analog elements. Each book also utilizes the same grid that guided its film’s graphics and shots.&nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; To keep the series cohesive, the unique visuals follow the same organization and structure across all three books (See Below). Layering is also a theme that appears in each book as well as in their packaging. Despite the books being so heavily image-based, I wanted to curate and present the stills in engaging ways that communicated more than just the pictures themselves, and layers were one of my primary tools. There were so many interesting things in each movie that it was hard to choose the stories/patterns I was going to emphasize, but I tried to include as many as I could while still maintaining a clear focus. My goal was to create a product that was really delightful to look at and explore. The majority of the series was designed in three weeks, giving me about a week per book. &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp; &nbsp;Studying the movies both graphically and from the perpsective of film increased my appreciation for the detail and thought that goes into every choice. The process of writing the books forced me mentally distill my ideas, research, and observations (a really challenging but useful process). The films I chose were gorgeous and fascinating, and designing for them was really a joy.
